Tarot, Terrariums, and Taxidermy: A Moody Witchy Wedding at Pomarius Nursery
“We wanted our wedding to feel a little witchy, a little bitchy, and unabachedly us” - Katie, the bride
When a couple comes to House of Lilly Events and tells us they want to throw out the rulebook, we know we’re about to create something iconic. For Katie and Kaine’s late October celebration in the heart of Portland, Oregon, the goal wasn’t to follow the season's trends, it was to manifest a world that felt as deep, layered, and authentic as the couple themselves.
The result? A "moody-witchy" immersive experience.
The Setting: An Urban Greenhouse Escape
Choosing a venue is the foundation of any wedding design. Blockhouse and Pomarius Nursery provided the perfect "living" architecture. Surrounded by the lush, dark greenery of the nursery under a rainy Portland sky, the atmosphere was naturally cinematic.
Designing the "Unconventional"
House of Lilly Event’s couples value design-heavy experiences. So of course for Katie and Kaine, we leaned into three distinct elements that transformed the evening from a basic wedding to a showstopper.
01. The Tarot Card Seating Chart
Forget the standard tables being labled 1 - 12. We had each table assigned a specific Tarot archetype. From The Lovers to The Tower, guests found their names on a mystical display that set the tone for an evening of magic and intention. This wasn't just a chart; it was the first "touchpoint" of the design narrative.
02. Bespoke Handmade Terrariums
In a nod to the nursery setting, we moved away from traditional floral heights and opted for handmade terrariums. These served as tiny, self-contained universes at displayed around the greenhouse. Each one was meticulously crafted to feel like a piece of the forest floor had been captured and preserved just for this night.
03. The Viral Guests: Dressed-Up Taxidermy Mice
The piece de resistance, was the taxidermy mice at every single table. Each mouse was dressed in tiny, bespoke outfits, making it fun for guests to visit each table and see all of the difference mice. These mice were puchased from around stores during the two years of planning for this wedding and through Etsy.
This celebration was a reminder that your wedding day is a rare opportunity to stand fully in your truth. Katie and Kaine didn't just host a party at Pomarius; they invited their community into their world. It was a day defined by radical authenticity, proving that when you design from the soul, the result is something that resonates far beyond the walls of the venue.
In the end, the most memorable weddings aren't defined by trends, they are defined by the courage to be exactly who you are.
